Project Ideas

Well, I'm thinking about what I might do for my project.  My son recently went off to college and is taking College Algebra!  He's found that his math professor is not as helpful has he had hoped.  So I've ordered a second copy of his textbook and have been helping him via skype!  I was thinking about creating a Google Site where I could give him sample problems and review videos so he can access the information when he needs to see it!  I can help him review for tests as well.  He could also share the website with his fellow classmates for more information!

I just know it would really help him and it would give me a chance to create some good math instructional material.

  1. I think it sounds good, Tami... How will you integrate technology for him and his friends so that they would be considered level 4 users? Would all of the programs or activities require them to use technology? Would they create a project using technology? Just curious!

I remember when I had college algebra- I wish my mom had done something like this for me... I loathe math (I probably shouldn't be saying that to a math teacher!) Forgive me!

  2. Tami...you're a nice mom! I like this idea. To make it level 4, could he create videos that demonstrate what he's learned? You tutor him and then he proves his proficiency by creating a video that allows him to explain the concepts he has mastered. I like the idea of a google site...learning math AND how to use technology in a relevant and productive manner.

  3. Awesome idea! You're creating instuctional math material AND helping your son! I agree that you'll need to find a way to get him involved in using the technology and making projects on his own to demonstrate what he has learned.

Perhaps creating the GoogleSite will be the first step (with sample problems, review videos, etc.) and then have him make a "final project" towards the end of a unit. Maybe this project can be a way he can teach it back to you in video form, narrated PowerPoint, or blog. This way, he uses technology in return to demonstrate what he's learned.

  4. Hey, Tami! After initial confusion, and commenting on others blogs, I'm here and going to work from the bottom up! So, this may be outdated by the time I get to the top, but here goes. This sounds like a great idea. Our son is taking physical science in the 8th grade, and is really struggling, so we've been coming up with extra things to fill in the gaps and enhance his understanding, so I totally understand where you are coming from. It is strange that from level to level, that is from middle school, then to high school, then to college that getting help with the subject is harder and that the teachers teach less.....such is the world.
